Tilton Engineering was founded in 1972 by Mac and Adelle Tilton in El Segundo, California. The company offers high-quality, innovative, award-winning clutch components and systems. Tilton Engineering was the first to introduce carbon/carbon clutch to be used in F1, which won first race during the 1987 Detroit Grand Prix used in Ayrton Senna’s Lotus-Honda race car. Most carbon/carbon racing clutches found on the market today feature this technology.
Tilton Engineering strives to manufacture the finest racing products for drivers and racing teams completely dedicated to their performance on the race track. This commitment was proven by numerous awards, including the Louis Schwitzer Award for technology given for breakthrough innovations in the race industry. In 1979, the company was relocated to the new facility in Buellton, California, where they are today.
The company manufactures driveline and brake parts, in-cockpit controls, and starter motors. The line of driveline components includes metallic, cerametallic and carbon / carbon racing Tilton clutch kits, bellhousings, flywheels, and hydraulic bearings. In-cockpit controls and brake components include master cylinders, balance bars, Tilton pedals, Tilton brakes, proportioning valves, and a line of accessories. Super Starters made by Tilton were first offered in 1981. Tilton starters are among the first high-power mini-starters for race cars and are produced for a wide range of applications. The technological developments by Tilton can now be found in a majority of race clutches used today, and Tilton components are utilized around the globe in almost every type of racing.
One of the top priorities at Tilton Engineering is quality. All components and systems are constructed by experienced engineers, who use the latest CAD and FEA software. Only the top-level processes and materials are utilized in order to deliver some of the finest products possible. Over 90% of Tilton’s machined parts are manufactured on location, while using top-grade equipment that includes Toyoda Horizontal Milling Center (HMC) and several Mori Seiki lathes. After initial machining, components are quality checked by using Browne and Sharpe Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and are tested utilizing a variety of proprietary equipment. After almost four decades, Tilton Engineering is just as motivated by the same goals as on their first day in business – innovation, quality, value.
