Our History

Amp Research was founded in 1998 by Martin Flick and Dave McLaughlin, two entrepreneurs with a passion for innovation. They saw an opportunity to improve the traditional running board with stronger, lighter materials and electronic power deployment.

In 2001, we launched the revolutionary PowerStepTM, the first automatic and electric running board. The strong yet lightweight 6061 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum construction and rugged die-cast linkage system was a game changer, providing increased access to the cab while only deploying when needed.

Over the years, Amp Research has continued to innovate and expand our product line. Some of our most popular additions include:

Rigorous Testing

From early design concepts to final production, Amp Research products undergo extreme testing to ensure real-world performance, including:

• Climate testing – Running boards are subjected to temperatures from -40 ̊F to 140 ̊F, as well as 90% humidity.
• Water immersion – Motors and components are immersed in water to verify sealing and drainage.
• Shock and vibration – Boards are shaken and stressed to simulate off-road driving conditions.
• Stone impact – Running boards are pelted with stones to confirm no punctures, chips or fractures.
• Power cycles – Motors are cycled on/off thousands of times, far exceeding expected usage.
• Load testing – Products are verified to support weight capacities of up to 900 pounds for running boards.

PowerStepTM OEM Factory Running Boards

Amp Research innovation can also be found directly from the factory. Through our PowerStepTM OEM program, we supply power running boards to manufacturers including:

• Ford – Providing factory installed PowerSteps on F-150 and Super Duty pickup models.
• Toyota – PowerSteps are dealer-installed options on Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner and Sequoia vehicles.
• GM – Chevy, GMC and Cadillac trucks and SUVs can be optioned with Amp Research running boards.

Manufacturing & Distribution

To produce our high-quality products, Amp Research maintains complete control over engineering, manufacturing and distribution from our southern California headquarters:

In-House Engineering

Our on-site engineering team uses the latest 3D modeling and simulation software to design Amp Research products from the ground up. This allows rapid prototyping and testing to ensure optimal real-world performance.

State-of-the-Art Manufacturing

Amp Research running boards and components are manufactured at our 150,000 sq. ft facility in Irvine using advanced machinery and quality control procedures. This includes:

• CNC machining – Computer-controlled tools expertly mill aluminum parts to precise specifications.
• Robotic welding – Robots consistency weld stainless steel and aluminum components for uniform integrity.
• Powder coating – All aluminum parts are coated for extra abrasion and corrosion resistance.
• Water testing – 100% of motors are immersed and tested for leaks prior to leaving the facility.

In-House Distribution

From our attached warehousing and distribution center, we can ship products directly worldwide. This allows us to quickly fulfill and deliver PowerStep orders while closely monitoring inventory.
